Vision
Through education, advocacy and community organizing, the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission promotes Nonviolence, Social Justice and Sustainability.
Peace & Nonviolence Peace is at the heart of democratic principles and is
central to a healthy world. We believe world peace will come through making friends, not firing guns. Therefore, we support diplomatic, civilian solutions to regional conflicts rather than violence. Dynamic peacemaking includes education, rallies, demonstrations and, as a last resort, nonviolent resistance.
Through consciousness-raising and open dialogue we bridge racial and
cultural divisions in our community. We advocate peaceful conflict
resolution. To this end, we organize an annual "All People's Breakfast" on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, a summer Peace Camp for kids ages 6-13 and a Peace Scholarship for activist high school juniors and seniors. Our annual membership breakfast is held on Sept. 21, the U.N.-designated International Day of Peace. For more information, contact dynamic@ppjpc.org.
Social & Economic Justice
We believe there cannot be peace in our community or the world
without social and economic justice. Racism, classism and militarism are all obstacles to a just society. The Pikes Peak Justice & Peace Commission has always worked in solidarity with the poor and homeless of Colorado Springs. Our "Urban Experience" program is a one- or two-day immersion into issues of poverty and homelessness. Participants in these walking tours visit places where homeless people stay or are served. In 2009, we led almost 200 people on 15 different tours - church groups, students and educators. We are also helping organize the "Come Out of the Cold Project" to create new solutions for our homeless neighbors camping outside. For more information, contact econjustice@ppjpc.org.
Sustainable Living
We affirm the sacredness of all creation and acknowledge the
interconnectedness of all life. The natural way of our planet is
balance, harmony, and renewal. We help organize classes (Northwest Earth Institute and others) in sustainability and offer "Earth Plunge" immersion classes. We helped organize the Green Cities Coalition to advocate for expanded recycling, renewable energy and transit in the region. We are currently trying to help form a new regional transit district to serve the entire region. We celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, where we induct local eco-leaders into our Green Hall of Fame. For more information, contact sustain@ppjpc.org.
