Board of Directors

Bill Durland is the current PPJPC Board Chair, a civil rights attorney and retired Professor of Philosophy, History and Government. He holds a Ph.D. in Political and Religious Philosophy from the Union Graduate School, an M.A. in Biblical Theology and Nonviolence from the University of Notre Dame and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. He is a long time peace activist, community organizer and author.

 

Genie Durland is the current PPJPC Board Secretary. She has an M.A. in Peace Theology from the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminaries, and was a founder of the Fisher’s Peace YMCA in Trinidad, CO. She was a co-founder with Bill of the National Center on Law and Pacifism. She and Bill have also served with Christian Peacemaker Teams working in Israel-Palestine, Iraq and on the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

Steve Flynn holds a J.D. from the University of North Dakota and is a Colorado Legal Services attorney. A conscientious objector in the Vietnam War, he was arrested for his convictions. He is the treasurer of the Colorado Springs ACLU and a member of its legal committee. He serves as chair of the PPJPC Peace Scholarship Committee and on its Nominating Committee. He is chair of the 4th Judicial District Access to Justice Committee.

 

Ellen Johnson-Fay is the Minister Emerita of All Souls Unitarian-Universalist Church and chair of the PPJPC Board Fundraising Committee. She was a participant in a Peace Pilgrimage to Israel and the Palestinian Territories and the recreation of Gandhi’s Salt March in India. She studied at the Jungian Institute in Zurich and spent a month at Thich Nhat Hanh’s Plum Village in France.

 

Peter Haney, Ph.D., Born, Lawrence , Kansas , married to Laura Padilla.  Former PPJPC Dynamic Peacemaking Director and volunteer 2006-2008.  Mentor Director and Anthropology teacher at Colorado College .  Researcher and author on Mexican-American history.  Pete coordinated PPJPC’s relocation to new offices last October and numerous peace and justice events for PPJPC.

 

Suzie Hodges, M.A. in Teaching, specializing in environmental and social justice.  Teaches 4th grade at the School in the Woods.  PPJPC Peace Camp Director for the past two years and PPJPC volunteer bringing innovations to program.  An athlete; this summer she will participate in the Colorado Marathon, Iron Horse Classic, and a couple triathlons.

 

JoAnn Nieman, current Vice-Chair, is a graduate of Northwestern University and holds a J.D. from John Marshall Law School, and studied at Church Divinity School of the Pacific. She is presently Vice-Chair of the PPJPC Board. She has served elsewhere as a member of NOW, Vista Volunteers and as Executive Director of the Communities United for Reproductive Freedom. She is a grant writer, fundraiser and volunteer teacher.

 

Dorothy Schlaeger, current Treasurer, is a Sister of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. She holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Notre Dame and taught at collegiate level for over 20 years. She is a former Executive Director of the PPJPC and current Treasurer of its Board. She participated in a Voices in the Wilderness mission to Iraq in opposition to, and in violation of, the U.S. imposed economic sanctions and is an organizer of the annual Sisters’ Witness Against War event now it its 8th year.

 

Mary Jane Sullivan, Ph.D. in Philosophy and Communications Magna Cum Laude, European Graduate School .  M.A. New School University .  Philosophy and Performing Arts Instructor and Lecturer at UCCS.  National Coordinating Committee member, War Resisters’ League.  Authored books, edited publications, producer of Fearless Speech Radio at UCCS on social justice and cultural transformation.  PPJPC volunteer.

 

Loring Wirbel, B.A. Science Journalism, University of Arizona . Lives in Monument with wife, Carol, daughter Abbey and pets.  Author, writer, activist.  Awards in journalism by Project Censored and Scripps World.  Co-chair Colorado Springs ACLU, member of Citizens for Peace in Space and Mobilization for Survival and past PPJPC Board member. Author of Star Wars, U.S. tool of Space Supremacy.
