AK-47 destroyed in “Guns-to-Garden Tools” project

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhile many are responding to high-profile gun violence by buying more weapons, one Colorado Springs attorney wants to destroy his. Michael Warren, a defense attorney who spent 17 years with the Colorado State Public Defenders Office, submitted his Bulgarian-made AK-47 assault rifle for destruction today at Peter Sprunger-Froese’s Bike Clinic north of the Colorado Avenue Bridge.

Warren bought the weapon in the days following Sept. 11, 2001, and now regrets the choice. “I was sucked into all the fear,” he says. “Now I want the weapon destroyed. I don’t want anyone to ever have the opportunity to use it again.”

Brian Gravestock from Bike Clinic Too broke the rifle up and gave the parts to Mike Martin of RAWtools (WAR spelled backwards), who will make them into a garden tool in a nod to the famous biblical exhortation: “They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore” (Isaiah 2:4). The destruction and re-purposing of Warren’s AK-47 is the launch of a “Guns-to-Garden Tools” project in partnership with the J&P.
